1. Intoduction

Overview

Server Health Notifier is a powerful, simple and easily configured application for notifying about the system resources problems of a local or remote computer. With the help of this product you'll be instantly informed of your server problems! You'll be able to specify critical values for every monitored resource. When exceeding the critical level, you'll be sent an e-mail or shown a balloon with the detailed information or the specified application or command will be executed. The monitoring is performed via windows management instrumentation (WMI). Server Health Notifier requires minimum system resources and has an ability to minimize to tray icon and be invisible when your server is in normal state.

System Requirements

To use Server Health Notifier, you need:

Installation

All you need to do is to follow instructions of Installation Wizard. There is no need to reboot, so you can run the program right after it is installed on your system.

Uninstall

On the Windows "Start" menu, select "Control Panel", choose "Add or Remove Programs", find Server Health Notifier 1.2 in the list of currently installed programs and click the "Remove" button.


2. Connection with Remote Computer


Configure WMI

Most Windows computers have the correct WMI and DCOM settings for Server Health Notifier to authenticate and gather computer information, but not always. The following pages will help you check and if needed set the WMI and DCOM setting back to the original defaults.

The following steps will walk you through setting the WMI Namespace Security to the default settings.

Note: This is for Windows XP, Vista, and 2003 Server

1. Click Start and then select Run
2. Enter wmimgmt.msc in the Open: dialog box and click OK
3. Right click WMI Control (Local) and select Properties
4. Select the Security tab, select Root and then click the Security button 
5. Select Administrators , and then click the Advanced button 
6. Select Administrators , and then click the Edit... button 
7. In the Apply onto: list box select This namespace and subnamespaces , make sure that Execute Methods, Full Write, Partial Write, Provider Write, Enable Account, Remote Enable, Read Security , and Edit Security are Checked under the Allow column, then click the OK button 
8. Click OK, OK, OK, and Close the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) window

The following steps will walk you through setting the DCOM Properties and Security to the default settings.

Note: This is for Windows XP, Vista, and 2003 Server

1. Click Start and then select Run
2. Enter dcomcnfg.exe in the Open: dialog box and click OK
3. Expand Component Services > Computers , right-click My Computer and select Properties
4. Select the Default Properties tab: Check the box next to Enable Distributed COM on this computer , set the Default Authentication Level: to Connect , set the Default Impersonation Level : to Identify
5. Select the COM Security tab: under Launch and Activation Permissions , click the Edit Default... button 
6. Select Administrators , make sure that Local Launch, Remote Launch, Local Activation , and Remote Activation are Checked under the Allow column and then click OK
7. Under Launch and Activation Permissions , click the Edit Limits... button 
8. Select Administrators , make sure that Local Launch, Remote Launch, Local Activation , and Remote Activation are Checked under the Allow column and then click OK
9. Click OK again and Close the Component Services window



Server Health Notifier connection settings

Connection settings are specified in connection tab.

You can choose Localhost or Remote computer mode. In Remote computer mode you must specify the name or ip-address of the computer, username-the name of the user who has access right to remote computer and user password.
You must also specify Polling interval in seconds (30 seconds by default).

To check connection press "Test connection".


3.Resources Monitoring

CPU Usage

Estimates total CPU Usage for all processors.
Possible values are from 0 to 100%.

Disk Usage

Estimates Disk Usage which is total or specified.
To choose logical disk you must press "Advanced settings".
Possible values are from 0 to 100%.

Free Phisical Memory

Estimates Free Phisical Memory.
Values are in MB (Megabytes).

Page File Usage

Estimates Page File Usage.
Values are in MB (Megabytes).

Network Usage

Estimates Network Usage which is total or specified.
To choose adapter you must press "Advanced settings".
Values are in kbytes/sec.

Threads

Estimates total number of threads in the system.

Process

Checks if the process is running. If it is running, the state is OK. otherwise it is ERROR.
To choose process you must press "Advanced settings".

Web Server Connections

Estimates number of web server connections for specified web server.
To choose web server you must press "Advanced settings".

4. Notifications

User interface

This notification is useful when you are at your computer. In case of any server problem you'll see red tray icon, popup balloon or open Server Health Notifier window.

In notification settings the following options are available.

Flash tray icon
Tray icon changes into red in case of error.

Up balloon message
Shows balloon with error information. With clicking on it, main applications window opens. The balloon disappears for a while.

Play sound
Plays sound signal.

Open main application window
Main application window opens in case of error.

Open message box
Message box opens in case of error.

If "Notify again when parameters return to normal" checkbox is on, notification is activated when parameters return to normal after error.
"Notify only error values repeat.. times" option specifies a number of error values in succession, then notification is activated.

E-mail

This notification will send you a message with problem details. It uses smtp protocol directly and requires no installed e-mail client.

In notification settings the following options are available.

Server
SMTP-server name or ip-address.

Port
SMTP-server port (25 by default).

Sender Address
Sender E-mail address.

Send to
Recipient E-mail address.

Authenticate
Authentication mode enabled.

User
Server user name.

Password
Server user password.

This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
Secure E-Mail using SSL.

If "Notify again when parameters return to normal" checkbox is on, notification is activated when parameters return to normal after error.

Run application

This notification executes user defined application or command.

In notification settings the following options are available.

File name
File name or shell command.

Argument string
Argument string for an executable file.

Authenticate
Authentication mode enabled.

User
Windows user name.

Password
Windows user password.

5. License and Registration

How To Order

Open About tab, then click on How To Order.
A site page opens, after that follow our instructions. After purchasing our product, you will be sent an e-mail with serial number.
Next, you must register the product.

Registration

After purchasing the product, you must register it.
Choose About tab, press Register... and enter the serial number which you received on purchase.
Server Health Notifier will be registered.

To register, your computer must be on-line. Otherwise, or in case of error during the registration, you should inform us by e-mail support@trogonsoftware.com
